"Mangalore Biotech Laboratory(MBL) " was first premier Biotech Facility created in Mangalore in 1998. Prof. P. Tauro, Rtd Professor of Eminence of Indian Council of Agricultural Research and a renowned Microbiologist and Biotechnologist was the founder Director. Mangalore Biotech Laboratory took lead in providing molecular biology based service eg Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) based diagnostic service to medical and aquaculture community. MBL was the first to bring into market indigenously developed shrimp immunostimulant Aquastim to combat viral disease affecting aquaculture in India in 1999.
MBL was the first to bring to market indigenously developed PCR based detection kit for Whit spot Syndrome Virus (WSSV) the dreaded viral disease affecting aquaculture in India in 2003 based on the technology developed by Dr. I. Karunasagar's group in the University of Agricultural Sciences. This technology received the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India award for Biotechnology Product and process development. Thus MBL has been in the forefront in developing and commercializing biotechnologies for aquaculture. MBL went in for ISO 9001 certification for quality management.
MBL has now added on additional products and services. Following the implementation of Food Safety and Standards Regulation 2011 by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, MBL realized the need to have accredited Laboratory to have food and water analysed. MBL is now accredited by National Accreditation Board for Testing and Calibration Laboratory (NABL) for microbiological and chemical analysis of food and water.
